“Ubuntu DDE”, Is that a good distro?
Hi! Good day Linux enthusiastic… In this article, I’m going to talk about “UbuntuDDE” using my own personal experience. If you are hoping to install Ubuntu DDE this information might be useful for you.
What is Ubuntu DDE?
Yeah… Some of you may be thought about like that. What is Ubuntu DDE? Is that same Ubuntu which we all know? Technically, the answer is “yes”. But there is some explanation.
UbuntuDDE is a Remix flavor of Ubuntu system with Deepin Desktop Environment (DDE) . UbuntuDDE is a linux distribution based on Ubuntu with the most beautiful desktop environment.
Ubuntu + Deepin Desktop Environment (DDE) = Ubuntu DDE
That makes sense, right? Deepin desktop environment is the one of the most beautiful desktop environment. So people who like to use Ubuntu with that beauty, created a new flavor of Ubuntu called Ubuntu DDE.
First Impression of distro…
“This is awesome 🤩” that's what I felt when using first time. That distro is more elegant and good-looking. I tried UbuntuDDE Remix 20.04.1 LTS (Focal Fossa) Official Release. But there is a newer release UbuntuDDE Remix 21.10 (impish indri) Official Release which has more beauty and more features (not LTS).
That's a one clean desktop in which everything is in one place. It may be confused for some users in first time, but it doesn't have any top bar or sidebar like Gnome or any other desktop environments.
Another thing that this DE unique from others is its settings menu. It's completely different and has some attractive look.
It is more customizable than you thought…
That is the one main reason why people use Linux. In here, UbuntuDDE team make it easier for users. There are tons of ways that we can customize our desktop. Here I change some menu drawer views.
UbuntuDDE resource usage
I should admit this distro required some resource amount rather than common Ubuntu distro. After booting, it used nearly 900mb Ram usage. Here is the htop result after fresh install OS.
Here is the system monitor view without running any background apps.
Issues that I faced when using this distro…
⚠️ There was a some error pop up called “System program problem detected”, after fully update the system. I reported it once, and it keeps popped up occasionally.
⚠️ There were some glitches in some app’s window top bar. Sometimes I had to use Alt+f4 to close the programs. That wasn’t a good user experience at all.
⚠️ There was a problem of connecting Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Took some time to recognize my Wi-Fi. Bluetooth's connection problem was fixed after full upgrade and restart of the system.
Conclusion
Finally, I would like to give some ratings using my experience.
Eye catching and desktop experience → 9/10
Resource usage and efficiency → 7/10
Usability and software experience → 5/10
